I live near a railroad crossing with the railroad tracks in my backyard and trains always blow their horns loud enough to annoy me. Also, there are noisy diesel engines the pass through my backyard loud enough to rattle the house. Does the Federal Railroad Administration have strict railroad noise abatement laws such as when a train passes a railroad crossing, just like there are noise abatement laws for aircraft?

Hey fellow pilots,

I have flown in the u.s a couple of times but not often and never any distance to speak of.

Anyway next week I plan to fly from toronto to memphis via sandusky and kowb.

Your airspace has a lot more activity than ours (take a look at the charts for north of the border and you will see what i mean).

Anyway I will be flying vfr. North of the border I often fly vor to vor (even though i am using a gps) and I use flight following. I am contemplating doing this on my us trip with a liberal use of victor airways, my thinking is that for the most part it will keep me out of restricted airspace etc., will give me some guidance re altitudes and will make sense to atc for flight following etc.

I note for instance one route which will take me over cincinnati. Do i need to avoid large airports like that or can i fly that routing talking to atc without too much trouble.

Your comments and tips are appreciated.

I've been using an iPad in the cockpit for several years now and love it. With all of the options out there, it is hard to narrow down what will work for me.

I used Foreflight for a couple years but jumped ship over to Wing X this past year to give it a shot due to its split screen view and track up. I like both apps. They both have their pros and cons, but, I have nothing bad to say about either.

Now, I'd like to incorporate Xavion into the mix. With the updates to Foreflight and the AHRS integration into the Stratus 2, I've been looking at switching back. Originally, I had the impression that Xavion would eventually work with the Stratus 2 so it made my decision easy. Well, now after seeing the latest Xavion newsletter, looks like Stratus 2 will not be supported.

So, that leaves me with WingX. While I like WingX, I prefer the interface of Foreflight. Also, it looks like the AHRS/GPS/ADSB options that would work with WingX are more expensive than the Stratus 2.

So, I'm stuck. My options are:

1. Go to Foreflight with the Stratus 2, use the free synthetic vision app that comes with it, and use Xavion with the iPads internal gyros.

2. Stay with Foreflight and pay more for a AHRS/GPS/ADSB system but have it be compatible with Xavion.

I'm not looking for a battle between software because they are all good. Just curious if some of you have been, or are in, the same situation and what your thoughts are.

Prior to their acquisition by Cessna the Columbia pilots had a user group to share issues unique to these planes. It seems to have vanished .. ( Ex Hot Starts )

Any 400 owners out there that can point me in the right direction?

Thanks,

There is this piece of formed sheet metal on the aft end of the fuselage called a "rudder". Surprisingly that thing is connected directly to those two pedals that you use for taxiing on the ground. It is actually an "in-flight" control for the axis called "yaw". Only 1 upwind left wing low w/left wheel touching first seen out of the lot. I care.
